Various entries transcribed from deeds and legal documents dated 16 July 1768, 1 Sept. 1804, 18 July 1806, and 17 Aug.1807, relating to right of way to a wharf site at Charleston Harbor; [originally developed ca. 1735, known during the 18th century as Ancrum's and Motte's Wharf, but in subsequent years (ca. 1800-1842), as Greenwood's Wharf, until sale to James Adger in 1842, after which it became known as Adger's Wharf]. This property apparently named for the elder Jacob Motte (1700-1770), who served 27 years as Public Treasurer of the Colony of South Carolina, and was father of Jacob Motte (1729-1780); Motte inherited the land in 1731 from Robert Tradd.
